“In the early 80s, to correct serious economic problems at home, Reagan’s government jacked up interest rates and thus screwed over Europe in two ways: France had to abandon its socialist aspirations under Mitterand, and American disco records became expensive to import in Italy.

The second was a blessing in disguise. Europe witnessed an explosion in local dance productions to make up for the American disco records, which were hard to get and starting to suck anyways. Italo Disco was born.”
